Originally water came from wells. Those known to have existed at:

In 1901 the Mid Kent Water Order extended its powers of supply to include Hartley and in due course mains water came to Hartley, helping to prompt speculative development.

In 1934 came the first proposal to build pumping stations at Hartley and Fawkham, but this was to pump water to Croydon! The Croydon Corporation Bill contained this proposal, but it did not make the final act of 1935.

The pumping station at Hartley Bottom came about as a result of the North West Kent Joint Act 1936. The Hartley Water Committee was established. The pumping station was opened in April 1944.
