Figures published by KCC for the year ended 31 March 2001 (Sevenoaks Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership) show Hartley to be a relatively low crime area for Kent. Overall the then ward of Fawkham and Hartley ranked 253 out of the 331 wards in Kent. That is, only 78 wards had lower levels of crime.

One crime where Hartley is above average is arson, where the ward was ranked 5 out of the 32 wards of Sevenoaks District for deliberate setting fire to vehicles, and 4 out of 32 for other cases of arson. This appears to be a local problem, as the figures for Ash ward were even higher.
