 Unemployment Last updated 9.1.11

In the 2001 census, there were 74 unemployed in Hartley (42 men, 32 women), 45 in Longfield (26M, 19F), 127 in Ash (71M ,56W) and 5 in Fawkham (5M, 0W).  The table below records the numbers unemployed for the similar DA3 postal area since 1986.  This uses the narrower measure of "unemployed and claiming benefit", hence the lower figures.  Male unemployment has always been more than half of the total and at times has been over three-quarters of the total unemployed in

Since peaking at over 664 in February 1993 the numbers have fallen and leveled out at around the 100 mark since 2000.  In July this year, just before the credit crunch it stood at a low point of 62, but as a result of the 2008 Credit Crunch rose to peak at 232 in February 2010.  However the numbers have fallen markedly since, the latest figure for November is 165, with male unemployment falling markedly.
