The residents of Hartley receive their services from a variety of sources. Here, only a few can be mentioned.

In this photograph one of the several post boxes can be seen. Others can be found on Hoselands Green, at the junction of Stack Lane and Church Road, in Manor Drive near its junction with Church Road, on Stocks Hill, opposite Hartley Hill Cottage, in the front wall of the Black Lion and opposite Goldsmiths Cottage in Hartley Bottom

Hartley has a number of shops: here is a selection

The two parts of the Parade of Shops at the Junction of Church Rd and Ash Rd

This parade was built in 1935 and at one time was called Jubilee Parade. Originally the Hartley War Memorial stood at this junction. It was moved to the Green in 1970 after it had been hit by a number of vehicles. This area is still an accident spot according to recently obtained accident statistics.

The Parade of Shops at Cherry Trees

These shops were built in 1968 on part of the site of Cherry Orchard, a small holding noted for its poultry production dating back to the 1920's. The shops were built against local opposition and still remain a source of controversy due to their unsightly and unkempt condition and poor parking.

Hartley Garage whilst still selling petrol

The building of Hartley Garage dates back to the 1920's when it was owned by the Hartley Agricultural Cooperative Society. This organisation was established during the day when Smallowners were developing Hartley from just before the First World War.

Hartley Social Club

The Hartley Social remains an important institution in village life since its foundation in December 1934. It has been very successful in providing a relaxed atmosphere where people of the village can meet in social surroundings.

Hartley Country Club

The Hartley Country Club occupies 10 acres of land to the west of Ash Rd. It is reached from Culvey Close. This club, too, has been important in developing village life since its foundation in 1934. It offers a unique combination of sporting and social attractions from 8 am until late, 7 days a week.. For several years it has hosted the village fete and productions performed by Hartley Players.Hartley W I Hall

The Hartley Women's Institute was formed in Hartley in 1921 and today it comprises two sections, the afternoon and evening sections. During its long history the W I have played an important part in the community of Hartley. Unfortunately, the old wooden building was destroyed by fire in 1971. The present building was completed in1974 with much local and voluntary help.

Old Downs Residential Home

Old Downs is one of several institutions for elderly people in Hartley. This photograph shows Nellie Cook on her 100th birthday on Thursday 14 January 1971. Fairby Grange Residential Home and other facilities in Wellfield and Bramblefield provide much need support for the elderly.
