Hartley Parish Plan
Background - Work

Return to homepage

Those of you who filled out the 2001 census form, may recall there was a question where you had to write the address of your place of work. This information has now been collated at council ward level as "input-output" statistics. Therefore the results include both Hartley (91% of ward) and Hodsoll Street (9% of the ward).

The figures listed below are for workers who are not in full time education. To avoid any possible identification of individuals, the Office of National Statistics have rounded off any number between 1 and 3 as 3. So even a figure of 6 might represent only one male and one female worker travelling to that ward. This makes it difficult to come up with a meaningful figure for Maidstone and Tonbridge, who should appear near the bottom of the chart.

The results show the importance of local employment. By far the biggest number was the people who work in Hartley itself (592), of which 313 stated they worked from home. And many travel no further than Hartley's neighbours to the north (Longfield - 94), south (New Ash Green - 77), west (Fawkham/West Kingsdown - 48) and east (Meopham - 38).

Hartley is clearly economically part of North Kent. The main destination for commuters is not the city of London, but Dartford. 292 people work in Dartford and Bluewater, while another 150 work elsewhere in the borough. A further 150 work in Bexley borough, 121 in Gravesend and Northfleet, and 90 in Bromley.

The results highlight the importance of Bluewater to Hartley's economy, as probably the single largest source of employment.

Again the results show how little Hartley has to do with Sevenoaks economically. Just 27 work in Sevenoaks itself with another 42 in Swanley and 15 in Otford.

Central London is still an important destination; 335 people commute to the 6 central London boroughs of the City (111), Westminster (98), Tower Hamlets (41), Camden (39), Southwark (27) and Islington (19).

Perhaps surprisingly, commuting to the Medway Towns is relatively low - just 51 travel in that direction. And very few cross the river to Essex or travel across south-east London to the major centre that is Croydon. One long distance workplace of note is Crawley in West Sussex, home to Gatwick Airport (15).

Some people work as far away as Devon, Norfolk, Birmingham and Greater Manchester; and 9 work abroad.

The figures work in reverse too. Those commuting to Hartley include New Ash Green (89), Meopham (27), Longfield (26)
