For centuries most of the land that one day would become Essex was part of the Longfield Court estate.  In the 1840s this was a large 31 acre field called Barn Field which stretched from Hartley Road to Fawkham Road.  In addition a strip of land, about 120 feet wide, at the Fawkham Road end belonged to Salts Farm.

Looking west from Number 44Longfield Court was owned for nearly a thousand years by the Archdeacons of Rochester.  An archdeacon is a church official second in seniority to a bishop, with responsibility for part of a diocese.  There was a major reorganization of the Archdeaconry in 1859-1863, and it seems as a result, the Longfield Court estate was put up for sale in 8 lots in 1865 by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners.  Essex Road formed part of lot 5, being 16 acres. This consisted of all the land bounded by Main Road, Station Road, the Railway and Salts Farm.  The buyer was the Gravesend brewer, George Wood senior.  In 1869 he added Salts Farm to his holdings.  His son George Wood junior put the land between Station Road and Fawkham Road, together with Whitehill Road, on the market in 1881 [Maidstone Journal 6.6.1881] and sale was completed for £2,500 on Christmas Eve 1883.

The buyer was a Gravesend firm called The Kent and Essex House Land and General Investment Company.    They had only been founded in 1883 with the purpose of buying land to build houses and shops upon, or to sell off as plots.

Essex Road and Kent Road do not appear on the 1895 Ordnance Survey map, so we can assume Essex Road was laid out some time between then and the first house in 1899.  Longfield Parish Council minutes record efforts to get the company to make up the road in 1902 and 1906, but finally it was left to the frontagers to pay for it to be made up in 1911.  They raised complaints two years later when it was found the council had been short changed on the amount of roadstone used.  Mr Lynds told the parish council that the contract had been for 13 inches deep of stone, when in reality it was only 8 inches deep.  He said the frontagers didn’t like being robbed.

The oldest house in Essex Road is number 48, built by Albert High in 1899.  A number of other houses were quickly added.  The 1907 edition of the Ordnance Survey map shows Fern Cottages (12-22), Victoria Cottages (24-38), and 40-48 on the south side; together with 1-2 St George’s Cottages (7-9), Wallace Cottages (17-23), 37-41, 51-53, and 61-63 on the north side.  The corrugated iron chapel (Longfield Bethel) was built between 1903 and 1907.

Originally the road had named houses, numbering occurred about 1957.

Streetlighting was definitely here before 1963, when 2 additional lighting columns were added by the Parish Council.

An aerial photograph of Essex Road in 1960 shows only 2 cars parked on the road.  Things had changed by 1967 sufficiently for parking restrictions to be introduced at the Station Road end (the London Gazette had a similar proposal in 1962, but no evidence it was adopted).  The problem of commuter parking led to restrictions between 7am and 10am in the rest of the road in 1971.
