About the Road

Gorse Way is a pleasant road which runs from Church Road, opposite the Cherry Trees shops, round to Gorsewood Road. Briars Way, Beechlands Close and Simmonds Drive all lead off Gorse Way.

Gorse Way can trace its history to the purchase of most of Hartley by Small Owners Limited in 1912-13 and their breaking up of the ancient fields into new smallholdings. Smallowners sold the land that would make up the Church Road end of Gorse Way in two plots. On 18 June 1923, they sold the 8 acres of the southern side (including the site of Montaza) to May Symons of Gorse Cottage for £425. On December 31st of the same year she purchased the northern half from Liverpool insurance clerk Henry Walter Vincent Sherwell (1873-1952). The Symons home, Gorse Cottage (later renamed Thorn Hedges) was sited about where the end of Gorse Way is today is today.

May Symons (1885-1969) was the wife of Hedley Symons (1883-1948), for whom a young Charles Ellerby went to work in 1915: "He owned Hartley Woods and bred pigs. We cut several acres of larches for pit props and spent much time chasing errant sows through the Hartley gardens." Hedley was a manufacturer's commission agent, originally from Cornwall who had previously lived in Highbury, London. He married May in 1913 when she was employed as an organising secretary.

From these conveyances flowed the birth of Gorse Way. Mr and Mrs Symons created Gorse Way, presumably as a private access road originally. It is marked on a conveyance plan of 1 August 1930 as a 16' 6" roadway and right of way. How it got its name is uncertain but is likely descriptive, but it was already called so before the war.

The Symons sold these two large plots to the Fawkham Development Company in on 7 November 1934 and the Symons went to live in Fairby Lane. On the same day the company bought a slice of Hartley Woods and much of the north side of Gorsewood Road from Martins Bank (who had foreclosed on a loan). Fawkham Development Company was owned by Hartley residents - George Samuel Mainprize and his wife Rosalie Marion Mainprize. He was a builder and estate agent and had previously owned land at Castle Hill, but by then was living in at Blue Bungalow, later renamed Gorsewood House (located approximately where the front of 13 Beechlands Close is today). The company started acquiring lands and building but ceased trading in 1937 when the money ran out. Things became desperate for Mr Mainprize, he said in 1939 the family had to survive on the 35/- a week he made as temporary ARP warden, and they could not afford coal. The company was wound up in 1940. The Mainprizes later moved to Woodlarks, Fairby Lane (1951-7).

By 1936 the only houses built were two at the Church Road end - Hartley Wood Cottage and, confusingly, Gorse Cottage. In this year Bay Trees first appears, and by 1939, Elderberry Cottage, Elizabeth Cottage, Eversley and Applewood (Bellerieve) had been built. These houses, standing somewhat lonely among the vast open space of land can be clearly seen on the Luftwaffe's aerial reconnaissance photo of Hartley, taken in 1940.

In the years after the war the gaps have gradually been filled in. The road was completed by joining with Gorsewood Road in 1961, when Gorsewood House was demolished and replaced by the modern houses there.

Between Church Road and Mariners, Gorse Way is not an adopted road, but is a private road maintained by the residents. The road was unmade as shown in the Frith photo of the road in 1955 above. In 1966 the residents signed a deed to set up a trust to maintain the road. The Dartford Chronicle told the story in 1978:

"Gorse Way is a private road in Hartley with a street scene good enough to adorn the top of chocolate box. From almost every window in the houses you can look out and see trees.

Soon after Bill and Doris Farmer moved into Gorse Way 17 years ago, a neighbour suggested they should get together to do something about the road, which was full of large potholes.

Bill said: 'We decided to test the feelings of our neighbours to see if they were willing to have the road made up. We included the few houses in Briars Way off Gorse Way. Everyone agreed and we formed the Gorse Way and Briars Way Road Committee.

When the committee was formed, terms were drawn up to start a proper road fund. Committee members set to work measuring the road, and how much frontage each house had, found what materials would be needed and costed the operation.

Bill said 'The road was properly laid and paid for in 1967. When you think of today's charges it was very cheap. We charged according to the mortgage householders had and it worked out between £37 to £50.

The road has been resurfaced twice since that first laying and residents are proud of their efforts. Bill is now chairman of the road committee. He said 'To keep the road in good shape every householder pays £3 a year for its upkeep.' "

Gorse Way is a quiet road with 4 sleeping policemen to reduce traffic speed. A traffic survey was conducted as part of a planning application to build flats at Prospect Lodge. On two days in June 2006 an average of 246 vehicles a day travelled northbound and 242 travelled southbound past the site. Most traffic respected the 20mph speed limit.

Information about the houses
Last updated 28.6.2025

Explanation:

This is information collected from various sources about the houses, divided as follows:

(1) Description - this has mostly been drawn from sale adverts and observation from the road. Names of properties are included if the road is not numbered or the name appears as well as the number in the offical Royal Mail address. Changes of name and the date, where known, are also included here. Area measurements can be done in a number of ways, so may get differing results.

(2) Building History - the date of construction is sometimes approximate as it is based on the property appearing in the electoral register or the subject of a planning permission etc.

(3) Rates and Council Tax - the rates registers for 1956, 1963 and 1972 are held by Sevenoaks Council. I have included the gross rateable value, that is the amount it was thought the property could be rented out for. For some reason the 1956 valuation is actually what the rental would have been in 1939. The rateable value was then subject to certain statutory deductions and this figure is what people paid rates upon. Council tax was introduced in 1993, the value was (and still is) what it was believed the property would have sold for on 1 April 1991. However significant building works means it can be increased when the property is next sold and this is shown by "improvement indicator".

(4) Sales and Rents - mostly from property adverts and Land Registry records. Of course those based on adverts may not be the price it actually sold for. There are some cases of property valuations for mortgages from Dartford Rural District Council. House price data 1995 to date produced by Land Registry © Crown copyright 2023. To report an error, go to Change a sales record form.

(5) Site history - this contains a selection of records which demonstrate which farm and field the property stands upon.

I have tried to make sure the information is accurate, but no responsibility can be taken for any errors. If you plan to rely on the information, you should check the source data to be sure.
