Main Road (Hartley Road to Pescot)

Longfield > Roads
Main Road runs the length of Longfield parish from Pinden to Longfield Hill.  It is part of an ancient highway running from Dartford to Wrotham and Meopham, and appears on Morden's 1722 map of Kent, one of the first to show roads.

The name Main Road appears to belong to the 20th century though.  Earlier references usually call it Dartford Road or sometimes Meopham Road.  The 1918 Electoral Register has many references to Dartford Road and none to Main Road.  It seems to have only acquired the name when it became a "main road" (the B260) in 1926.

Main Road in 1722 Morden's Map of Kent

As the 1722 map shows, the main village was at Longfield Hill.  Before then the only buildings on Main Road were Longfield Court (where Langafel Close is today), the Church and Pescot (shown on a 1769 map).   Even after the coming of the railway the road was slow to develop.  By 1914 there were the shops 1-3 (1908), and 36-38 (1902), and the primary school (1881) and a handful of private houses, including Mabel Cottages (1890).  In the interwar period there was some council house building, being Pondowne Villas (7-25) built in 1922, Valley Villas (207-237) built between 1923 and 1928 and Woodview (115-145), built in about 1931.

Before the war Main Road was probably the equal to Station Road for commercial development with a baker, butcher, cafe, bank, garage, boot maker and at least 2 grocery shops.  Since then the number of shops has declined, and the Dartford council appears to be content with that, as none of the businesses in Main Road are part of the defined Longfield district centre where there is a policy to prevent loss of shops (Dartford Borough Plan to 2037).

The availability of land in the past has led to a lot of public buildings being sited here, beginning with the original primary school in 1881.  Now Main Road has 4 schools, including Longfield Academy with a wide catchment area.  To this can be added the Longfield Telephone Exchange (1952) and a private Polyclinic at Tuppence House.

A number of bungalows were also built along the road in the interwar years, as were five additional business premises at numbers 27, 40, 48, 49 and 61.   The post war years have seen the infilling of most of the road frontage,  The only gap remaining is between 237 and Foxhill.  It appears that this gap was introduced in the 1957 Town Plan to prevent coalescence of Longfield and New Barn,  The development of Northdown Road was allowed instead of this (Gravesend Messenger 6.9.1957).

A lot of Longfield's council house building has been on Main Road, beginning with Pondowne Villas (7-25) in 1922.  About 68 council houses have been built on Main Road, although many are now in private hands.

With all this development has come a massive increase in traffic.  In 1948 Kent County Council recorded 1,000 vehicles a day on Main Road.   This had risen to 11,170 outside the School in 2009 (Department for Transport).

Historically, most of Main Road within Longfield village belonged to Longfield Court, shown yellow on the plan below.

Information about the houses

Explanation:

This is information collected from various sources about the houses, divided as follows:

(1) Description - this has mostly been drawn from sale adverts and observation from the road.  Names of properties are included if the road is not numbered or the name appears as well as the number in the official Royal Mail address.  Changes of name and the date, where known, are also included here.

(2) Building History - the date of construction is sometimes approximate as it is based on the property appearing in the electoral register or the subject of a planning permission etc.

(3) Sales and Rents - mostly from property adverts and Land Registry records.  Of course those based on adverts may not be the price it actually sold for.  There are some cases of property valuations for mortgages from Dartford Rural District Council.  House price data 1995 to date produced by Land Registry © Crown copyright 2023. To report an error, go to Change a sales record form.

(4) Site history - this contains a selection of records which demonstrate which farm and field the property stands upon.

I have tried to make sure the information is accurate, but no responsibility can be taken for any errors. If you plan to rely on the information, you should check the source data to be sure. If you spot an error, please let me know via the contact form.
